Toronto’s Green Roofs and Toro Irrigation

Toro is one of our industry partners. We research the market and products to come up with the best available suppliers and components and Toro fits the bill, with innovative designs and more. It comes as no surprise to find that they are part of an innovative research project looking into how to expand and better utilize green roofs in Canada’s urban environments. The project is part of the University of Toronto’s Green Roof Innovation Testing Laboratory (GRIT Lab) at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

Green Roof + Solar Energy
The new study is looking at whether photovoltaic (solar power) panels can work together with green roofs. Now, the two elements tend to compete for space on the roof rather than working together. The study will take many factors into account including the cooling effect of green roofs and even how the shade produced by the photovoltaic panels will affect growing.

“The research results will benefit the green building industry by producing Canadian-based performance data, generating design guidelines and tools, and building technical experience that can be applied to the next generation of sustainable building design,” says Co-Researcher, Civil Engineering Professor, Jennifer Drake.

The project features 33 test beds that vary in terms of growing media composition and depth, plant type, and irrigation schedules. They will be available to view online and compare the results of various approaches as the web-based part of the project. As one of the industry partners, Toro provided irrigation equipment and expertise.

Toro is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, just one of many milestones. In 2012, Toro’s award-winning Precision™ Soil Sensor became the first wireless moisture sensor introduced to the residential irrigation market. The technology had been available to the agricultural sector but Toro was the first to bring it to the consumer.

Smart Irrigation and You
You can access the same level of technology for your home with today’s sprinkler innovations. Along with Toro, we use RainBird products, another industry leader. If you are just considering a residential sprinkler system or if your existing system is more than three to five years old, you owe it to yourself to check out the new technology.
