Springtime is a natural time of renewal and most homeowner’s thoughts turn to the trees, plants and flowers that are greening and blooming before their eyes. The new growth alone at this time of year requires additional watering, something that in a normal year, that you’d be able to reasonably count on during the spring. April showers and all that.
But – seriously – when was the last time we had anything like ‘normal’ weather here in the GTA?
Spring is also an ideal time to make many changes to your lawn and landscaping, including:
– New grass
– New plants
– Other landscaping changes like creating/eliminating flowerbeds
Just as your lawn is taking off from a long winter’s sleep, we begin to get into the warmer season when rainfall is often lessened. It’s important to monitor because new grass growth that isn’t sufficiently watered (and existing grass too by the way) is likely to go dormant and thin out, completely defeating the purpose of adding new seed or sod.
The Soil
What type of soil do you have in your area? The type of soil will also affect how much irrigation your landscaping will require. There are three basic types you’re likely to encounter:
– Sandy – which absorbs water faster
– Clay – which tends to retain the water, absorbing it much more slowly
– Loam – which can both hold and absorb water efficiently
Your Irrigation Partner
What it all adds up to is a lot of variables when it comes to keeping your new springtime growth well irrigated and nourished. The first rule of thumb is:
– Make sure your irrigation system is in good order when you start it up, because you’re likely to need it right away.
A properly designed and maintained automatic irrigation system essentially divides your lawn into zones that will provide adequate and optimized coverage to all areas of grass or planting beds. That means any changes in plant growth and composition are likely to necessitate changes in the patterns of irrigation too.
Our experienced irrigation technicians can answer any of your questions regarding lawn irrigation systems, including the latest innovations and techniques as well as help you to get your system started up for the new season.
