From Drought to Flooding – Your Sprinkler System

Last year it was drought – this year it’s been wet, wet, wet and it shows no signs of changing. What’s a homeowner to do and how does it affect your home irrigation system?

Too much water can be as devastating as too little for your lawn and irregular watering can result in lawn and plant stress. Also, it’s not a matter of how much water your lawn and plants get overall, it’s a question of when too.

Here are some issues to keep in mind:

  • Gradual rains over a longer period (a full day or more) will serve to replenish your lawn and plants at root level. Sudden, heavy rains, however, aren’t always entirely absorbed into the soil as it can cause runoff once the top layer of soil is drenched.
  • In the case of heavy rains, let the lawn dry out thoroughly before you think about adding more water via irrigation. For plants, it’s recommended that you let the first inch or so of soil dry out before re-watering. Grass generally requires more watering because its roots systems are shallower so you can do so when the surface ground is thoroughly dried.
  • Soil – different types of soil hold water differently. Coarse soil, for example, holds less water than fine-textured soils, meaning that coarse soils need more irrigation.
  • Is your lawn mature or are you starting out with seeding, new sod or plants? New growth does require more water to become established at first. Later in the growth cycle, it will require less.

The Solution: Intelligent Design & Smart Water Systems
Innovations in sprinkler systems and design are the answer. At FutureGreen, we stay right on top of the latest and best information and products so that we can give you the best advice and service.

  • Irrigation System Design
The right design will provide adequate irrigation to all areas of your property, taking into account location and types of plants and lawn, the layout of your property (i.e. topography – where is the high/low ground?)
  • Smart Water Systems
We believe in and install Rainbird, Toro  and Hunter systems because they’re at the cutting edge of irrigation technology. The latest systems use technology which can detect soil and weather conditions so that it provides just the right amount of irrigation at just the right time, taking all the guesswork out of it.

With today’s wild fluctuations in precipitation, smart water systems are the effective answer to fluctuating water needs. We design residential sprinkler systems with water conservation and efficiency in mind. This means your system is sustainable, ensuring availability of water for future generations and energy conservation in the water pumping, delivery and wastewater processing. Homeowners find their water bill goes down even as their green space becomes more full, vibrant and lush.
